New Episodes of SLBAAC online today!

Dear SLBAAC members,

Jeff, Aliza, Teresa, and I are pleased to announce the long-awaited completion of the web series documenting our investigation into the murder of Fernando Fernando, Silver Lake’s preeminent Conceptual Instalationist.

While we solved Fernando Fernando’s murder this past May, the filmmakers documenting the case only finished their web series this month.

Why the long wait you ask? Well, once the shoot was over all their HD video footage was transferred to celluloid, cut by hand on a steenbeck editing table, color graded photo-chemically at one of the final color correction sessions of illustrious lab DuArt in Manhattan, printed to 35mm, and then transferred back to digital via tel-cine. The high standards of SLBAAC demanded no less.

The new episodes (including a new version of episode 1 with brand new original score by avant-garde composer and respected taco critic Rob Gokee) are live now at www.slbaac.com/communicae.htm and www.blip.com/slbaac

We hope you enjoy them. And remember, part of being a member of SLBAAC is educating others about our elite group of athletes, adventurers and crime solvers. So please, share this news with your friends, family and social networks. SLBAAC's Online Membership Application is, well, ONLINE!:

The SLBAAC Web Development and ASCII Art Committee has released the new version of the our online membership application. All applications are reviewed and prospective members are notified within in one (1) week of submission.

Are you located in Silverlake, Southern California? Also, when is your next meeting? Is anybody allowed to show up?

Matt,

While SLBAAC was originally founded in San Fransisco, we been located in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake since 1950.

We just held a Membership Open House this past Saturday, but we do have more in the works. www.slbaac.com and this blog are the place to find out about those events when they are announced.

And yes, our open houses are open to the public and all skill levels of Badminton are welcome. However, if you’re not familiar with 35mm and medium format film stocks from the 1960s you should probably do a little review.

The Web Development and ASCII Art Committee are currently working on our revamped online application form. It should be up in a few days and you’ll be able to find it here and at www.slbaac.com. In the meantime, you can email us at the.slbaac.@gmail.com and we’ll get an application to you.

And of course, if you’re in the Los Angeles area you can also come to one of our Membership Open Houses. We just held one this past Saturday and we’ll be doing more through the spring and summer.

Dear Technicolormadman,

Thanks for your interest in SLBAAC.

Currently the filmmakers documenting the Fernando Fernando case have have not released any more videos, mainly because the investigation is ongoing and they’re waiting to see how things shake out. (Whether or not we solve the crime is not in question, we will, the question is when.)

However, they are still working on the project and www.slbaac.com and this blog are the best place for updates.

SLBAAC OPEN HOUSE A SUCCESS (obviously)

Neither the threat of rain nor the slight chill in the air could stop SLBAAC from holding our Membership Open House on Saturday March 26th. Membership Committee Chair Thomas and other SLBAAC members were on hand at the Park at the Silver Lake Recreation Center to meet prospective new members, take applications and discuss developments in the community, the state of the sport and adventuring.

Acceptance into SLBAAC is rolling and new members are inducted as spots open up. Applications are currently being reviewed and prospective members will be notified of their status within the week. If no memberships are available when a qualified applicant is approved, that applicant will become a provisional member of SLBAAC, able to participate in all public events and in some member’s only events as well.

A SLBAAC Contest

Ok team, the community outreach branch of SLBAAC has been hard at work getting posters for this weekends membership open house put up around town. They’re also having some t-shirts made, which got us thinking:

Let’s give one away. So, the deal is we’d like to see some cool photos of our signs hung up around town. Bonus points are of course awarded to photos shot on film. So get out there and find a flyer and take some pictures. Post them to twitter and make sure to tag @SLBAAC so we see them. We’ll pick our favorite and give that person a t-shirt at the open house this weekend. We went out today and took some of our own to get you started.

I swear there is a flyer in the last picture. You just need to look REALLY closely. OK, well get out there and find some flyers and get your pictures posted. We can’t wait to see them!

Like playing badminton? Enjoy adventuring? Then come join us this Saturday at our latest Open House. Play a game, grab a club membership application, and learn about what a membership in the Silver Lake Badminton and Adventurers Club means.

All badminton skill levels are welcome, no need to feel intimidated. You should however be prepared to list the last 5 albums you purchased and defend your reasons for doing so.

We’ll be meeting in on the grassy area adjacent to the Silver Lake Rec Center. Just look for the flying Shuttlecocks.

Crime Solver Case File 004224: The Death of Fernando Fernando

We’ve just gotten our crime scene photos back from the lab and present them here, as is SLBAAC protocol, so members of other committees within SLBAAC may consider the evidence as well.

For this crime scene we used a combination of macro photography as well as a pinhole camera that we picked up at MOMA on an adventure in NYC. The macro/pinhole combo allows us to focus on details without losing sight of the bigger picture. Having used our last roll of Kodachrome on the crime scene of Case File 004221 (Spontaneous Human Combustion at the Silver Lake Lounge) we shot these on Kodak BW400CN, our favorite 35mm B&W stock.

The Crime Scene as it first presented itself to us.

Fernando Fernando, the great Conceptual Installationist. Snuffed out too soon. There were no immediate signs of struggle.

The materials Fernando Fernando was working with before his death?

Note spots and smudges on glass. Clearly Fernando Fernando was not careful in the washing of his tumbler. In a rush perhaps? Did he know his minutes were numbered? Or simply, not that clean of a guy.

Glasses do seem to indicate scotch glass. Also could use a cleaning.

We find the double exposure really helps us think out of the box and avoid the fatal trap of concentrating too much on the obvious and visible evidence.

Recently some new media filmmakers approached us about documenting the exploits of our Crime Solving Committee. At first we were hesitant, but when they assured us it would look like cinema and not “The Real Crime Solvers of Silver Lake” we decided to let them take a shot. So far we’re pleased with the results.
